Our program is considering hiring past Centering participants and training these women to work as community health workers. We recently had an event where past Centering moms gave their testimony on how Centering impacted them. The event was very well-received and we received a lot of feedback suggesting we incorporate past participants in our community outreach. We hope that by hiring and training past participants we can have them lead our community outreach at health fairs and perhaps eventually train some to be facilitators in our program. Are any other sites doing anything like this? If so, do you have a job description you can share?

Hi Nicole, what a fabulous idea! I've heard that sites have hired past participants as coordinators and some as clinical support staff after they've finished school, some recruit patients onto leadership committees, some have them involved in intake groups, but not a focused effort to hire and train them to be community health workers (yet). I will scan through email and see if I can recall which sites, but in the meantime I hope folks chime in here!

As a past participant who has been hired to be a coordinator I can attest that it is being done! I have to assume that it wasn't only my Centering experience that got me the job, but it definitely made me an interesting candidate. My job title is Maternal Health Advocate and I work out of a FQHC in New York.
I think it is a great idea for outreach and if you can train more than one or two (a Centering army!) to get the word out, you'd have a potentially profound impact. So much of the struggle in recruiting patients is the unknown aspect of it. I was recruited by a sweet but young person who had never had a baby. I was willing to try it out and I found it to be super beneficial but I think a lot of new moms or second and third-timers might feel like it is a faddish thing that has nothing to do with the reality of being pregnant. So it is invaluable for me to be able to say, "You know, I had similar concerns before I decided to attend. But I did it and really felt it served me greatly."
I don't have much input on a precise job description because my position encompasses a lot more than just Centering, but I just wanted to voice my full-throated endorsement of your plan. Past patients are a great and untapped resource. Also, if they come from the community from which you are recruiting they have instant credibility. That is gold.
Good luck!
