We have standard chairs (both with and without arm rests) in our Centering space. I'm not much of a fan of sitting in these chairs for a two hour session and I certainly hear much grumbling from our pregnant mamas. I'm wondering if anyone incorporates any other seating options (balls, yoga cushions etc) into their sessions ... I'm currently looking at offering yoga mats, meditation cushions, bolsters and some balls - but would love to hear from others who've gotten creative with seating, any thoughts on the topic would be appreciated!

This is a great question! Many years ago, before Centering, as Childbirth Educators, many of us believed that it was important for pregnant women to get down on the floor and sit in cross legged positions to help open their pelvises. To that end, we taught all classes in empty rooms on mats or on the carpet. Only women with problems were given chairs.. Ahhh the radical olden days! They are past..... To date, I have not seen anyone requiring moms to sit on the floor. Most sites are using chairs - some are more comfortable than others, but a couple stand out with their innovative ideas. 1. At one site they give moms the option of recliner or exercise (labor) ball to sit on. I will try and get them to post a picture. 2. Another site wanted their moms to feel like princesses, so they bought thrones, and moms sit in a circle of thrones and have been heard to say - "I feel like a princess." Will try to find pictures here too. A few ideas....

In the Syracuse area, we use a recliner for those women needing an NST in the circle, admittedly all other moms in the circle are jealous of the one in a comfortable perch. I have seen bean bags used as well as birthing balls and peanut shaped exercise balls as an option for traditional chairs and of course the beautiful rocking chairs in the Boston area.

Thanks for the responses! I think we'll go ahead and test a few different options, I'll keep you posted with pictures and feedback from the Groups. In addition to lack of comfort, I think conventional chairs put our mamas in an unhelpful position, often exacerbating aches and pains of late pregnancy. Whereas floor sitting encourages folks to change position often, and try a variety of positions - both things we know are terrific for everyone, but especially wonderful for pregnant women!
