Does anyone do a Centering Intake (the initial establish care visit). We currently have the patient come in for an intake visit to establish care. We confirm pregnancy, order labs, collect a history. The next appointment is for the physical. All visits after that are Centering groups. We'd like to start all visits Centering style but can't figure the logistics or registration (running insurance and establishing a sliding fee if not insured... How do others handle the initial encounter?

All of our patients coming in for the first time get an individual appointment first. That is usually where we do everything (like histories, sliding fee if uninsured, initial lab orders, etc). We are also able to take that time and mention Centering to them face to face, rather than recruit over the phone (talk about barriers that wouldn't allow them to come to group care). I think the providers at our office generally like this method because once they have their initial appointment out of the way, assessment in the group setting does not take as long. However, I look forward to the webinar next week to hear other methods that could work more efficiently.
