For the past 5 years or so I have been doing mindfulness in my spanish speaking Centering groups. It has been great and the women like it. If anyone has questions about doing mindfulness in Centering groups, let me know.

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to ones experience in the moment with a nonjudgemental and accepting way, basically secular meditation. I have been using it in my groups for awhile. It would help me if people had more targeted questions related to mindfulness in Centering groups. Nancy Bardacke wrote a book re: mindfulness in childbirth called "Mindful Birthing." What I do in my groups is heavily influenced by Nancy's work.

Thank you so much for sharing. Some of our providers were discussing incorporating a mind/body wellness element into groups and this is helpful.

I really recommend doing it. At first I was afraid that my women would not like it. I have been giving them a few extra eval questions re: the mindfulness component and they really love it, though they don't always let on. One time NPR came to my group (they were doing a piece on caring for Latinas on the program "the World"). Anyway the woman came and meditated with us. She interviewed the women in my group. One quiet woman revealed that the mindfulness was her favorite part of group. I would not have known without the interview.

I am interested in Centering because: The centering model and facilitative leadership provide families with the support, education & assessments they need to become partners in their own care.

I am interested in Centering because: ...it's about relationships and support being recognized as an essential component of health & Healthcare. The lasting connections created during the transformational year of pregnancy is an invaluable asset for new parents.

I had a similar experience in that I was somewhat afraid to offer these types of practices to my groups. Once I started to do it, it was well received and my groups really benefitted from it. We try to incorporate guided meditations into several sessions. By linking the benefits of mindfulness to not only pregnancy but labor, birth and parenting, people are able to use practice the in all areas of their life. Thank you for the curriculum outline.

Thanks Laurie for sharing this. At our consortiuum meeting for NYS on National Prematurity day (Nov. 17th) we will be doing a presentation on Mindfulness. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Genie
