Today marks the beginning of our week long sharing of special Centering stories in celebration of Mothers Day (May 14th). You will be reading stories from patients, providers and even staff!
We hope these stories will not only inspire you in the work you do but also remind you that Centering impacts real people in deep ways.
Happy Mother's Day!

Our first story is from CenteringPregnancy mom, Amaryah. She shares her experience on Centering and what it's like now that she is a mother. One of the things I loved about Centering was how informative it was. This was our first baby and it really helped us feel prepared and know what to expect going into labor/delivery and parenthood. Prenatal visits can feel rushed at times, and you don't necessarily know all the right questions to ask as a first time mom. With Centering, we knew we could always ask questions (or learn something new that we didn't even know to ask) without feeling rushed.I loved how comprehensive it was as well as the feeling of community with the other parents in the group. I really loved this part of Centering. We have developed great friendships with the other parents in our group and now get together every other month or so for a group dinner!I loved being able to build a relationship with one midwife and nurse. I wasn't sure if I would receive the same care and individualized consideration from a midwife in a group setting versus from a doctor. But I received wonderful care and attention for me and my baby, no doubt the same or better than seeing a doctor for prenatal check ups. I was so very glad we decided to go this route for my prenatal care. Now that Baby M is here, the biggest change has been a shift towards selflessness. We take for granted before kids that you can do pretty much whatever you want, when you want. That changes when you have a little life in your hands to raise. It's a huge responsibility, but I wouldn't change it for the world. For my first Mother’s Day I am excited to have a little one and watch him grow up....and maybe breakfast in bed with baby cuddles Thank you amydonaldson63 for your help with gathering these stories!

I am interested in Centering because: I want to make a difference in someones life for the better and help educate them about the better way of healthcare. I am passionate about what I do with our Centering Program at Kaiser Permanente. I love the lifelong friendships that I build while going thru the journey of pregnancy for all of my patients. I love the personal care that patients receive and I love to keep our groups fun and current. Coming up on being accredited for a year in Jan 2018 and we have grown so much. Already starting 2 groups a month starting Dec 2017, beat our goal to start 2 by a month. #MicDrop

This is seriously the most awesome thing I have read! What a good feeling, its feelings like Amaryah's is the reason why I love Centering so much! I haven't been on here in a while and pulled an 11 hr day today starting another successful Centering group. Pretty exciting! Then to come home and see this is an amazing feeling! Thank you so much for allowing us to be apart of this Mothers Day Campaign. Seriously WOW! Thank you Centering Healthcare Institute and Nicole you did an amazing job on this! You are a rockstar! Now I will unwind a bit and see what else is going on on here! Our first story is from CenteringPregnancy mom, Amaryah. Our next Mother's Day story comes from one of our own CHI team members - the fabulous Centering consultant, Sunshine Muse ! Like her name and smile, her story will warm your heart. I remember being so happy to be a new mom. I’d had a midwife assisted birth, was successfully breastfeeding -because of my mom’s help- and was working a job that was family friendly and honoring of my son. Things were possible then and as a young woman working full-time and parenting it's really important to be able to see, and honestly say, that.
CHI is a family friendly environment that values parents who work and strives to improve both prenatal and postpartum experiences and outcomes. Although the little guy pictured here was a teenager by the time I came to work at CHI, the values that I had then –pertaining to work, family and social justice- are the values that I have now. I’m so happy to be working in and for a company that walks its talk and supports its families in living a balanced life, and it's clients in delivering a similar framework for the patients that they serve!

Sara, Centering mom-to-be, shares her experience and ponders what life will be like with "B." This is my first pregnancy and I was a little apprehensive but very much interested in doing Centering. I think the apprehension came from this being my first baby and not knowing what to expect but that's what Centering is for! The biggest draw for my husband and I to attend Centering was that it was offered on a weekend. We both work opposite shifts and he absolutely wanted to be at my appointments but neither of us really wanted to take time off work every month for it. Haha! The other big draw for me was that there was going to be a lot of information given and that was HUGE because again, first time mom here.
After our first Centering class, I think it's fair to say that we were both pretty optimistic and happy with what we experienced. The other couples were just like us and as we've continued through the classes we've gotten to know each couple as everyone has opened up so much. We share the same fears, milestones, questions, and humor. Amy and Karen have done an amazing job at making awkward topics not so awkward and to make sure to answer questions that we may be too embarrassed to ask. I look forward to seeing everyone every month and hearing about all the things we've all gone through or even just new developments in getting the babies' rooms ready. We all share an excitement together for ourselves as well as the others in the room. It's something special that you would never get at a normal doctor appointment. I'm looking forward to the reunion in August very much. I could definitely see meeting up with the couples after the babies come and Centering has ended. I'm not only vested in my family but also very much in the health and wellness of theirs now too.
This Mother's Day will be the last one I have minus "B" (our nickname for the baby; we aren't finding out the gender). I am looking forward to having a very quiet weekend relaxing and pondering what life is going to be like in the future.

Our next Mother's Day story comes from one of our new board members, Ashley Lanfer. Ashley participated in a CenteringPregnancy group before the birth of her third child and previously served as a strategy consultant for Centering Healthcare Institute. Now she is a board member! Currently, she is a partner at Wellspring Consulting, which provides consulting on strategy, market analysis, business planning and organizational design for the nonprofit sector. Here's Ashley's Centering story. My Centering group was an unlikely sisterhood. We were Muslim and Christian, married and unmarried, poor and well off. Some of us were refugees from East Africa. One of us was a teenager. One mother had given birth to four children alone in her home and was now preparing for her first hospital birth in America. Several of the women spoke limited English - I speak some Kiswahili so that was often the best way for us to communicate. These were delightful women I felt privileged to know and learn from, but who I never would have met were it not for Centering and the context it created for meaningful connections across our differences. As well, I had never before been involved in the collection or recording of my own vital health statistics before. It was fantastic. I felt like, "why the heck don't we always do it this way?" The shared experience of mothering - especially during pregnancy and early parenting - is potent enough to dissolve most any differences that might otherwise divide women. Centering creates a context for those connections.

Gosh I sure do love me some Sunshine! I miss her! She is so amazing and even tho we only had a couple days together I feel like we have formed a bond that can never be broken! She is amazing and I am so blessed to have her in my life. I admire her. Happy Mothers Day Sunshine, you are a rockstar! I love your pic and thank you so much for your kind words to other clinics about me and the growth we have made in a short period of time at Kaiser Permanente in Bellevue. It is an honor to be the first accredited clinic in our organization in our new region. Amazing things are happening but I promise you we could not have pulled off this success as well as we have without the continued support of Centering Healthcare Institute and all of the amazing people that work there. I have a lot of people from other clinics as well as from our own organization that are reaching out to me and I am willing to help out anyone as much as i can because we have all been there, the stresses of starting out something new, growing pains aren't fun sometimes but with the right support and keeping communication as the key to success, you can do anything! So thank you again Sunshine I am so proud to know you!!!!! XOXO -Amy Our next Mother's Day story comes from one of our own CHI team members - the fabulous Centering consultant, Sunshine Muse ! I love this so much! Sara is another one of my Centering patients and she is so amazing. She is actually the only one who isn't finding out the gender of her baby which makes it that more fun! I love to hear the way Karen and I can make awkward moments into not so awkward moments, this is another reason why I love Centering, because of the relationships that I get to build with these patients and even tho I don't know how they feel about the Centering group until maybe after they have filled out their evals, this shows that we must be doing something right. Thank you Sara, you are going to be an amazing Momma and I can't wait to meet Baby B! XOXO -Amy Sara, Centering mom-to-be, shares her experience and ponders what life will be like with "B." Our final Mother's Day story sharing is actually a collection of stories and interviews from the Centering team at Kaiser Permanente Bellevue Medical Center. They tell about their own experiences with Centering and motherhood. Amy Donaldson CMA & Centering Coordinator I am a seasoned mom of a 17 yr old and an 8 yr old. I love sharing my story as a Mom of 2 total opposites of children! I was a young mom, not married, like some of our patients. I like to share my story to show our patient that they can too if they are ever feeling like they can't handle it. They can, and they will. We have amazing patients and I am so proud to work where I work and I am so honored to get to know patients on this level. Fourteen years ago when I graduated college I never expected to be in this place where I'm at and love my job as much as I do! It's a totally amazing experience and I'm glad I get to be involved in my patients special journey called Pregnancy and helping them prepare for Parenthood!
What I love about Centering is seeing the growth and confidence of the patients while taking their journey thru Centering. It is awesome to see the bond that they form even starting at day one and the responsibility the patients take for their own health. I love that even though there is a standard to follow in the Facilitator book, and we touch on the subjects each session, it is totally up to the patients and what they want to talk about because it is group lead. I love that it is 2 hours and the patients don’t have to feel rushed. I love that we play games and can be ourselves instead of in a clinical setting you have to be a bit more reserved. I love the reunions. I love seeing the babies and I love seeing the parents giving each other advice at the reunions. I love seeing that at our reunions we can’t get them to leave so we can start our next group, haha. I love the trust and bond that I form with not only the patients but the support people that they bring. I get to know them and they get to know me on a personal level. Not something you get a chance to do in the clinic
I didn’t know what Centering was a couple years ago. When I came to my current job 6 months ago, I was so excited that I was able to step up and assume the role of Centering Coordinator and Co-Facilitator. As Centering Coordinator my coworkers know that they can count on me to make sure everything is taken care of and by taking on this role and since being accredited by CHI in January, our enrollment is skyrocketing. It is such a great feeling to see my coworkers excited about Centering and talking more about Centering. I am passionate about Centering and I want to involve our local resources in the community and within our organization to keep things new and fun and as educational for the patients and support people to prepare them for the most exciting time of their life.Lauren Smrcina CNM- Midwife The informal, community aspect of a Centering group. It is rewarding to see bonds for between the women. Its rewarding to have a chance to get to know these women outside a health clinic visit during their pregnancy. Centering groups have changed how I provide care in clinic visits. I have learned the importance of providing facilitated discussion along with support and education. I encourage patients to be proactive in their treatment decisions and do what feels right for them. This has helped me connect better with patients because of the open dialogue Centering Pregnancy has created.
Karen McConnell CNM - Lead Midwife Q: Why do you practice Centering?
A:It makes my job so much fun!I love seeing the group getting to know each other and sharing this life sharing experience of childbirth.
Q:What are your favorite things about Centering?
A: The reunion!!!! Seeing the Moms and Dads interact with their baby.
Q:How was the implementation of Centering impacted your work?
A:Centering brought FUN to my work day. Less repeating of same info over and over.
Q:Have you been able to connect more with patients? If so please explain.
A:YES! I really enjoy the connection.
Neha Patel CMA - Co-Facilitator I like to have a good bond with the patient. Centering pregnancy is really good stage where people get really good care. I wanted to provide that level of good care to the patient. That is why I do practice centering. Now I am more connected with my patient. If my patient see me outside the facility they always recognize me. In the facility if they came to the clinic for their appointment always want to see me or ask about. That feeling is awesome.

I was seriously so honored to be asked by nlewis is I wanted to participate in this Mothers Day Campaign by CHI. When 5/12 came I was at work, Kaiser Permanente Bellevue Medical Center and I logged onto Connects like I usually do and I saw the very last post for the Mothers Day Campaign. I started reading it and I was like oh my gosh this is so cool, it gave me chills and actually made me a bit emotional, then the lead doc came over and sat in my chair and read the entire post, the entire week of Mothers Day posts from CHI and she thought that was pretty awesome. Then other coworkers were taking over my work station to read it so I decided to forward to our entire staff so they could have it because it is pretty cool! I then forwarded it to my husband and my family and sent the link to all of management and upper management because they have had a critical role in the success and how far our clinic has come in such a short period of time, and I believe that communication is key with them also. I think its important for them to see things like this because sometimes management and upper management hear about complaints or things that we can fix as a clinic and not about the positive things unless brought to their attention. So its things like this with 8 stories for the Mothers Day Campaign from CHI and 6 of those stories are from our clinic, staff and patients. Again CHI thank you so much for your tremendous support day in and day out and your encouragement and thank you for including us in things like this to get our name out their as well. That was a pretty awesome feeling to see that on Friday. Your amazing Nicole and you did a great job on the Mothers Day Campaign! You're a rockstar!!!! (Wish I had a guitar emoji) lol thanks again! You are all the BEST!!!!!!
