Hi, I work as support staff for the WIC Program and the Diabetes Education Program. I am also on a steering committee to implement Centering Pregnancy at our Health Department in Dare County, NC. I would like to learn more about how other sites coordinate other health department services for prenatal patients, like WIC and/or diabetes education. We currently try to coordinate appointment times to offer these services to patients whenever they come in for their individual OB visits, but we'll need to adapt to a new routine when we move to group prenatal care. Any experiences you can share would be helpful. Thank you! -Emilene

Hi Emilene, This is a good topic. I think you simply organize a periodic inclusive guest or activity that supports your WIc and diabetes education issues. With this idea that everyone in the group could benefit from it, you could decide if it’s a one time supplement or periodic fwhej needed. Diabetes Education is helpful re : eating , activities/ exercise for all of us. Building on the point that someone in our family may need a glucometer you could help it seem less scary by just Showing how it works, etc. I am not sure it this is what you are asking, so please clarify if not. And take a look at our thread on activities for nutrition in the facilitator guide ! Kt

I would also like to share a thought - when you invite guest speakers to your groups, it's REALLY helpful to work with them in advance to find creative and engaging ways to deliver their content that's consistent with the Centering approach. Most guest speakers won't be familiar with ARR and facilitative techniques and will take a didactic approach.

Thank you both for your responses.
I would still be interested in hearing from other sites if anyone has any experiences they would like to share. Participating in the WIC Program requires one-on-one time for applying and picking up benefits, in addition to the education. Our county is small - at the site where we plan to have centering groups, we will also have a WIC office that is staffed by just one person. I am trying to think of the best way to make WIC easy and accessible and efficient, while not taking patients away from group time too much or at all. Even if your set-up is different, please share your experiences coordinating WIC services with Centering participants if you have any. Thank you!

Hi Emile- We are starting CenteringPregnancy at Pitt County Health Department (Greenville, NC) next month and have the same question with WIC involvement. Would love to hear how you are fitting this in to your group sessions! Email me please: Jennifer Perry-Hidalgo, CNM jennifer.perry-hidalgo@pittcountync.gov

We do intake in a group format as well. We have WIC in our building, and we have invited them to come up at the end our group and be present to help patients get on their schedule for same day intakes to their program.
