This article on smartphones becoming the way of communication between provider and patient popped up in my feed this morning. It made me wonder if/how our Centering practices are communicating with patients in this way? What are your thoughts on these apps?

My situation is rare I am sure but the Navy has "issued" me an IPhone to communicate with all of my Centering patients and prospective patients. The patients will text me "I want Centering" which is great because if a referral does get missed I am able to assist them. I have recently started texting patients interested in Centering when it is time to be enrolled in the next group. I provide the date, time, and a description of what to expect the first visit. They confirm by sending me a text back containing their email address. I then send another text message confirming the appointment date and time as well as send them an email with all of the details and a copy of their appointment calendar. They have all of this prior to walking into the Centering room. My patient population is under the age of 25 and they rarely answer the phone. It was taking me days and a game of phone tag to get a group enrolled. I tried this method after my 14 year old daughter Ellie suggested it. It has been so successful for me! They will also text me pictures of their babies...best way to wake up in the morning...a beautiful new Centering baby!

I am interested in Centering because: As a military spouse myself, I can see the HUGE benefit Centering has to our expectant moms who are often many miles from home with no friends or family nearby! I feel like the Centering model is a perfect fit for our environment!
