Hi colleagues- How many practices are still doing routine urine dips on asymptomatic patients and how many are ordering only when ruling out infection or proteinuria? Please advise. Thanks- Jennifer Perry-Hidalgo, CNM Pitt County Health Department Greenville, NC

I am interested in Centering because: I am the new CenteringPregnancy Nurse Lead for a large OB/midwife office in Southwest Michigan.

Our head OB still wants them done, even though we know the research shows it's not necessary. We have to follow their lead. We do them on every patient, Centering or not.

We stopped doing routine dips in our practice. We only do them based on symptoms. This has been an excellent change in our practice and my providers feel confident in their practice without the dips. It also has been a HUGE benefit for our patients to not have to pee at every visit and makes our centering visits move much quicker during that first 30 minutes. We love the change.

We stopped a while ago. It's not a medical indication.

We stopped doing routine UA dips back in 2002-do them only for symptoms of either pre-eclampsia or UTI's for our traditional OB patients. Our OB-GYN chair fat the times gave us permission. This worked really well when we started Centering in 2005. Also the Department of Defense has also not done routine UA dips for many years as well, based on evidence. Attached is bib on evidence. Bibliography-urine testing 5-06 MR.doc (38.5 KB) I do understand that many people are not willing to let go of this.
