Hello Everyone, I'd love some feedback from the current sites on what you do to have a successful and engaged Steering Committee. How often do you meet? Did the addition of somebody in your organization make a difference? Do you have an agenda in advance? Do you take turns facilitating the meeting? Here are some of the tips that worked for me. Please share more - Schedule your Steering Committee Meetings in advance to make sure you can accommodate (almost) everyone's schedule. It also helps in not losing momentum of your current goals at your site.
- Have Steering Committee members take turns facilitating and taking minutes. Make sure the minutes are available somewhere all committee members have access to.
- Have an opening and closing in each meeting
- Review the minutes from the previous meeting and celebrate any successes
- Invite a patient to join in on a meeting. This will help provide a different prospective for Centering at your site.
Please share tips below if anything has worked for you. Also please use this thread for any questions you may have regarding building a successful and engaged Steering Committee

There may be a pearl or two in this thread, too. What a valuable discussion!

I am interested in Centering because: ...it's about relationships and support being recognized as an essential component of health & Healthcare. The lasting connections created during the transformational year of pregnancy is an invaluable asset for new parents.

I am following this thread because we have not been successful in maintaining a Centering Steering committee. Our organization runs Centering Groups at two locations (midwifery and family practice clinic sites) but there is no communication or oversight between the two programs.
I like Deanna's suggestion to run the meetings modeled as a group, including an opening and a closing. It seems as though taking turns being the lead facilitator would be helpful in keeping things moving, by not placing the burden on the same people every time.
I would love suggestions on how to engage consumers to become involved on the committee, and what is the expected commitment to having a non-employee participate. Do you ask for a period of a year?
