I work at a: Healthcare Facility
My job role is: Healthcare Provider
I am interested in Centering because: Centering provides a framework that guides our patients to make deeper mind/body connections, instills a greater sense of community, and empowers them to be the best advocates for themselves and their families. I love being able to leave work re-energized and feeling like the work I do has reached someone on a a more personal level.

We have just started incorporating Centering groups into the rotation of our first year medical students. We have a system in place that works well, as we already have residents rotating through Centering groups. We have assigned the medical students to groups with EDDs that align with their OB rotations, and are now trying to navigate their involvement with their Centering families once they are admitted to the BP. While we want them to have a unique experience with these groups on and off of the birthing pavilion, we are trying to orchestrate the navigation of learners successfully - we have residents that will also be rotating on the birthing unit at the time of delivery and have set clear expectations that the residents will likely be given the first opportunity to catch the babies at birth. What we have come up with so far is that we intend to have them provide labor and post-partum support to willing Centering families from their group, will have doula philosophy based reading assignments for them, and are coming up with relevant learning opportunities.
I have watched the webinar "Involving medical students and residents in your Centering program," and have searched through CenteringConnects, but have been unable to find any discussion around first year medical students and the expectations that are set for them throughout both their participation in Centering AND on their labor and delivery rotation. We are currently creating written guidelines for both their participation in Centering as well as on the BP.
Does anyone else have experience with defining the roles of their learners in Centering? Do you have any sort of written guidelines you could share?

Chelsea, I am the CHI Regional Director for the Northeast (Southeast, West coast, and Great Plains too if any of you are reading this!) and would love to connect with you on this. The topic of learners in Centering is one I would like to further explore. We have had conversations around this with those who have championed it in other sites (Amy MacDonald and Kathy Trotter - Duke).
I encourage anyone interested in this topic to email me at mfitzmaurice@centeringhealthcare.org. Let's schedule a call to discuss your interest further!
Thanks, Mary
