August is National Breastfeeding Month. Centering groups create a safe space for open dialogue on breastfeeding - where all families and choices are heard. We would love to hear your experiences, success and lessons learned from your Centering groups.
1. What approaches are you using to keep your breastfeeding groups connected during these stressful times?
2. How are you integrating partners to support breastfeeding moms?
3. What breastfeeding resources are you sharing with your groups?
4. What differences and impact do you see in breastfeeding rates between individual care and group care?
5. During Covid-19, what approaches have been successful to address the breastfeeding needs of families?
These are just a few questions that can serve as guidelines for your stories. You can provide the story in the form of photos, videos, quotes, or a brief paragraph.
We are looking forward to your inspiring stories.

I am interested in Centering because: ...it's about relationships and support being recognized as an essential component of health & Healthcare. The lasting connections created during the transformational year of pregnancy is an invaluable asset for new parents.

I have our staff Lactation Consultant sit in on our groups, usually at session 3. Her feedback to the original post is as follows: "I would want to highlight the success of virtual visits (telehealth) for FNP, IBCLC lactation support through El Rio Health. This is a service available to everyone in the community, not just El Rio patients. Lactation support lends itself well to virtual visits, parents are in the comfort of their own home, less worried/risk about COVID transmission. Our outpatient program is unique in the sense that as a Family NP I treat and see both the parent and baby as my patients. While healthcare centers across the country seem to have seen a decrease in visits, the El Rio Breastfeeding Program is strong. We have incorporated my presence into the Centering model and sessions for prenatal visits, which then generates interest and awareness of the service I offer. I have a lot of patients following up during their pregnancy and/or after baby’s arrival. Below are some of my favorite resources I share with parents." Video to show latching: Early Hunger Cues: What to Expect in the First Weeks (feeding frequency chart, diaper output): Hand expression:El Rio Health Center's “Coffee for the Soul” group is a new mother's support group and meets virtually via ZOOM every Friday morning at 9 am in Spanish, and 11:30am in English: email MomWellness@elrio.org

The "Video to Show Latch" linked in my previous post is one of my favorite breastfeeding teaching tools to use in Centering! I usually just show the couple of minutes near the beginning (starting at 44 sec.) where it shows the wonderful latch animation. You can see the inside of the baby's mouth and how the tongue and jaw work together to extract the milk. It demonstrates beautifully the importance of a deep latch. Global Health Media has many, many videos on their webpage and they have an app, which can be very handy for providers or parents who want quick access to teaching tools out in the field. The app is called Birth & Beyond: Learning Videos for Mothers and Caregivers. globalhealthmedia.org/announcing-our-new-app-birth-beyond/
