Hi! We have been up and running with Centering pregnancy for 4 years now. And still session 1 is awkward. Do any of you have fun ways to make it less awkward?

Hi Amanda Murphy! Here are some interesting icebreakers that I found in the South Carolina Consortium board.

Amanda - I agree with you. We've also been doing Centering for a long time and struggled to get first sessions right. There is so much pressure on us to do it all: 1. Make patients comfortable 2. Make sure they have an amazing experience 3. See the patients clinically for the first time 4. Deal with your own damn nerves while hosting a totally awkward party... I do think flipping the session to do the orientation and get-to-know-you part helps a lot. I also think it may help to acknowledge how hard first sessions are and see if you can give the facilitators a little extra time beforehand to prepare. And a margarita bar for afterwards as a reward for surviving. I hope you're doing well BTW! s

I am interested in Centering because: As a military spouse myself, I can see the HUGE benefit Centering has to our expectant moms who are often many miles from home with no friends or family nearby! I feel like the Centering model is a perfect fit for our environment!

Hi! We have been up and running with Centering pregnancy for 4 years now. And still session 1 is awkward. Do any of you have fun ways to make it less awkward? Hey there! A co-worker of mine came up with a "getting to know you" sheet that the patients have to go around the room and actually speak to each other and find people who have done whatever is on the list. It's a great way to get them talking and socializing! Getting to know you....docx (17.83 KB)

I think circling up first and explaining how things will go helps a lot. I also really like the blood pressure in the circle model, it can reduce chaos and help people settle in. Doing it this way requires 2 cuffs and a basket for each to pass it around, plus one person on staff to demonstrate how it's done. Once the demo is done (can be done in the middle of the circle), it's time to start passing the baskets! After a few visits folks will be helping each other. It may help to have a cuff at a table off to the side in the event that there's anyone who prefers privacy, though in my experience people seem relaxed taking their BP and being helped in circle. Some sites also say they prefer not to do cups and beads in session 1. There are lots of other ways to still assess goals! Hope this helps

I am interested in Centering because: I want to make a difference in someones life for the better and help educate them about the better way of healthcare. I am passionate about what I do with our Centering Program at Kaiser Permanente. I love the lifelong friendships that I build while going thru the journey of pregnancy for all of my patients. I love the personal care that patients receive and I love to keep our groups fun and current. Coming up on being accredited for a year in Jan 2018 and we have grown so much. Already starting 2 groups a month starting Dec 2017, beat our goal to start 2 by a month. #MicDrop

Thats funny you posted this because this is the next thing on my list of things to purchase. Will be ordering soon and yes I agree this will ease up on the backlog of patients waiting for that 1 bp cuff we have and will keep things running smoothly.
